We Love The New Members Of Our Troop!

Let Ted E. Bear help you earn the “Stitch-It” Try-It or the Toymaker Badge!

It’s easy & fun!

BROWNIE STITCH-IT TRY-IT

It takes two meetings to earn the Stitch-It Try-It and it doesn’t matter which meeting occurs first:

One Meeting:  A trip to the Toy Factory, where the Brownies will learn how animals are made “from scratch”.  Then, each Brownie will  complete a stuffed animal of her own by selecting the color of eyes for it (and helping install them), helping to stuff it as hard or soft as desired, sewing it up using the same stitch that the commercial toy factories use (which we will teach and assist each one to do), giving it a vacuum bath, selecting two ribbons that will be tied into a bow, and then printing out a certificate of adoption or a story about how she made her animal.  Each animal will be “dressed” in a T-shirt that has “Brownie Girl Scouts” and the Troop’s Number on it.  The T-shirt will also have a flower on one side for use in sewing at another meeting time. (See sample photo of the shirt.)

Second Meeting:  Doing a little bit of sewing on the flower that is on the stuffed animal’s T-shirt.  During this session, the Brownies will sew on a button, do a few simple stitches on the petals of the flower, and then embroider a stem onto the flower.  If your location is within 1 hour of Springfield, someone from our store will be glad to come lead this meeting to help make it successful and fun.

COST:  We’ve made this reasonable for Brownie Troops to be able to afford.  Select the price range of animals that the Brownies will choose from — $10.99 or $20.99 — and take that times the number of animals being made.  The $10.99 animals are 8 inches long and there are 25 animals to choose from. The $20.99 animals are 15 to 16 inches long and there are 60+ animals from which to choose.  The price includes everything necessary to complete the animal, plus the T-shirt imprinted with the Brownie Troop number on it and the “Try-It Completion Kit.”

TRY-IT COMPLETION KIT:  The kit includes everything needed to complete the requirements for the Try-It:  the flower (which we will put on the shirt for you), thread, button, written instructions, and leader tips.  We will also loan the troop needles if we come to your meeting to help work on the shirts.  NOTE: If the troop has already completed the Try-It and/or doesn’t wish to do this additional sewing, then the cost will be $1 less per animal.

Since we first began offering this in 2002, we have worked with several Brownie troops in order to learn how to make this an enjoyable and successful activity, despite an occasional pricked finger.  Now, even beginning sewers can complete this project without frustration and, as a result, feel quite accomplished in what they have been able to do.  Best of all, for you as a leader, we have taken most of the hard work of planning and preparation for this activity off your shoulders.

JUNIOR "TOYMAKER" BADGE

It takes two meetings to earn the Toymaker Badge:

  1. First Meeting:  A trip to the Toy Factory, where the Juniors will learn how animals are made “from scratch”, with a special emphasis on all the things that goes into designing a stuffed animal.  Then, each Junior will become the Toymaker by completing the design of a stuffed animal of her own: selecting the color of eyes for it (and helping to install the eyes), helping to stuff it as hard or soft as desired, giving it a vacuum bath, selecting two ribbons that will be tied into a bow, and then printing out a certificate of adoption or a story about how she made her animal.  Each animal will also receive a T-shirt that has “Junior Girl Scouts” and the Troop’s Number on it.  During your troop’s visit to the Toy Factory, we will provide written suggestions for completing the remainder of the badge requirements.
  2. Second Meeting To accomplish the remainder of the badge requirements,  the troop, as a whole, will review the history of the Teddy Bear.  (We have provided sources of information for this in our written suggestions.)  Later, they will split up into patrols or small groups to create various games based on the badge’s requirements.  This includes creating a word game and a trivia game (using information gathered from the history of the Teddy Bear), a physical game using the stuffed animal and a teaching game.   Ideas for these games are included in the written suggestions.   At the end, they will come together to play each other’s games.

COST:  We’ve made this reasonable for Junior Troops to be able to afford. Select the price range of animals that the Juniors will choose from — $9.99 or $19.99 — and take that times the number of animals being made.  The $9.99 animals are 8 inches long and there are 25 animals to choose from. The $19.99 animals are 15 to 16 inches long and there are 60+ animals from which to choose.  The price includes everything to complete the animal, including the imprinted T-Shirt.

Let the Toy Factory help your troop have fun while earning this badge! Best of all, for you as a leader, we have taken most of the hard work of planning and preparation for this activity off your shoulders.

Be sure to plan to use our Party Room for your Troop’s snack either before or after their stuffing activity —  at no extra cost!
